Yup - I agree, up to a point.
I do firmly believe that page titles and descriptions are critical. So many people just treat them as an opportunity to do some keyword stuffing, or repeat the title and/or description site wide on every page.
What it all boils down to, as has been pointed out, is quality pages, properly constructed, with quality unique content. The titles and descriptions and critical elements of any page. They should contain natural language that describe the content of the page, with as little marketing and superlatives as possible.
